Young Researchers from iHEALTH Share Their Experience with Students in Peñalolén

Last Tuesday, August 6th, the Instituto Milenio iHEALTH was invited by the Proyecto InES Género UTEM to participate in the “Charla con investigadoras” at the Liceo Antonio Hermida Fabres in Peñalolén.

Laura Manjarrés, a master's student in Health Sciences Research at UC, and Carlota Rivera, a young researcher at iHEALTH, shared with a group of 70 eleventh-grade students about their research on the differences in the fatty liver phenotype by sex and the use of artificial intelligence in cardiac MRI images, respectively.

The event began with remarks from the technical head of the educational institution, highlighting the participation and importance of women in science. Subsequently, Camila Acevedo, Professional for High School Preparation from the Programa PACE UTEM, encouraged the students to choose STEM careers when entering university.

Vanessa East, a researcher from the Proyecto InES Género UTEM, introduced the researchers from iHEALTH so they could share their experiences, explaining how they dedicated themselves to research and showcasing the results they have achieved through their projects, to motivate and guide the students who are in a decisive academic period.

At the end of the day, Carlota Rivera commented: “It was an excellent experience. I believe both the girls and boys showed interest, and we were able to motivate them with our research, covering not only the area of biology but also science in general”.

The Instituto Milenio iHEALTH aims to inspire young people and teenagers to pursue careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), with a special focus on girls, to help reduce the gender gap in STEM.
