Students from San Antonio Learn About Medical Imaging and Physiological Sensors with Instituto Milenio iHEALTH

A group of 11th and 12th-grade students from Colegio Papa Juan Pablo II in San Antonio participated in a series of activities organized by the Instituto Milenio iHEALTH. The postdoctoral researcher, Dr. Carlos Valle, and the young researcher, Tabita Catalán, led the session where students identified fruits from MRI images and played with a dinosaur through muscle electrical signals.

Tabita Catalán, a Civil Engineer in Mathematics and Master's in Applied Mathematics, explained medical imaging to the students, focusing on MRI and the potential of artificial intelligence to enhance its use. They applied this knowledge by identifying various fruits from MRI images.

Dr. Carlos Valle, with a Ph.D. in Biological and Medical Engineering, explained the principles of physiological sensors through an electromyography demonstration, allowing students to control a dinosaur's jump in the Google Chrome game using forearm muscle contractions.

Finally, the prize for the “iHEALTH canta: ser científica es ser valiente” contest was awarded. Camila Flos, the winner in the 11 to 17 age category, expressed her gratitude for the institute's visit and activities.

Benjamín Fernández, the school's science teacher, praised the event as a wonderful experience that engaged students with the institute's work, helped them explore potential university careers, and delighted Camila with her prize.

The Instituto Milenio iHEALTH aims to inspire young people to pursue STEM careers through interactive experiences. If interested in participating with your educational centers, contact us at jbolton@i-health.cl.
