Six iHEALTH members receive the ANID National PhD Scholarship

PhD students from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile: Tabita Catalán, Óscar Loch, and Liena Bravo; and from the Universidad de Valparaíso: Sebastián Ponce, Sofía Lazo, and César Cheuque, have been awarded funding from the Agencia Nacional de Investigación y Desarrollo (ANID) to support their postgraduate studies.
Each of them will conduct research in various fields related to artificial intelligence, medical imaging, and health, under the supervision of iHEALTH academics and researchers:
- Tabita Catalán – Magnetic Resonance Fingerprinting with Self-Supervised Deep Learning. Supervisor: Dra. Claudia Prieto. Co-supervisor: Dr. Francisco Sahli. PhD in Engineering Sciences, Electrical Engineering, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
- Óscar Loch – Addressing the Long Tail Problem in Medical Image Diagnosis. Supervisor: Dr. Denis Parra. PhD in Engineering Sciences, Computer Science, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
- Liena Bravo – Research on estrogens and metabolic diseases (title to be defined). Supervisor: Dr. Marcelo Andia. PhD in Medical Sciences, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile.
- Sebastián Ponce – Explainable radiomic-clinical model for detecting clinically significant prostate cancer. Supervisor: Dr. Rodrigo Salas. Co-supervisors: Dra. Cecilia Besa and Dra. Paola Caprile. PhD in Science and Engineering for Health, Universidad de Valparaíso.
- Sofía Lazo – An Explainable Multimodal Machine Learning (XMML) Model for Predicting Perinatal Complications in Chilean Women with Gestational Diabetes. Supervisor: Dr. Rodrigo Salas. PhD in Science and Engineering for Health, Universidad de Valparaíso.
- César Cheuque – Self-Supervised Contrastive Learning and Radiomics for Leukemia Recognition and Characterization in Blood Smear Images. Supervisor: Dr. Rodrigo Salas. PhD in Science and Engineering for Health, Universidad de Valparaíso.
The ANID National PhD Scholarship is one of Chile's most prestigious funding programs, enabling outstanding students to dedicate themselves fully to their doctoral research and contribute to the advancement of science in the country.
With this achievement, iHEALTH reaffirms its commitment to training new researchers in critical areas of health and technology, promoting the development of innovative solutions through artificial intelligence and biomedical engineering.
