School Students Explore the Science Behind Medical Imaging at iHEALTH

In the context of the VISITIng Preingeniería UC, the offices of the Instituto Milenio iHEALTH in Macul opened to receive students from the Preuniversitario UC and Penta UC. The students had the opportunity to get close to the magnetic resonator used for research, interacting with magnetism to learn about its properties.

On Tuesday, May 28, a group of 26 students of secondary education discovered firsthand the work of the researchers at iHEALTH. The event, which is part of the programs of Preingeniería UC, aims to promote the careers offered by the Escuela de Ingeniería UC and the areas in which its professionals work, including engineers who are also part of the iHEALTH team.

Led by master's student Dabne Barrera and doctoral student Diego Pedraza, the students experimented with a group of magnets to observe the magnetic fields generated on iron filings. They also learned about the research lines developed at iHEALTH and understood the science behind magnetic resonance imaging.

Later, they approached and experienced the strength of the magnet that is part of the low-field magnetic resonator (0.55T), guided by medical technologist and equipment manager Nicole Araya. They also learned about the process of obtaining body images through a playful activity that involved visualizing images obtained from scanning various fruits, which they had to recognize through the indications of the health professional.

At the end of the day, the students expressed gratitude for the opportunity and were surprised to learn about engineering applications they were unaware of, motivating many to become more interested in the work of the iHEALTH members.

The institute keeps its doors open to the entire community wishing to learn about the latest advances developed by the researchers at iHEALTH.
