PhD student presents his results at the Hospital Carlos Van Buren

On Friday, April 12, Astrid Cancino, PhD student in Health Sciences and Engineering at the University of Valparaíso, was invited to present the results of her research at the weekly meeting of the Neurology Service of the Carlos Van Buren Hospital.

Dr. Lilian Acevedo, Head of the Neurology Unit at the hospital from Viña del Mar, asked the iHEALTH member to share the results obtained in her research “Impact of inflammation and oxidative stress on local neuroimaging markers during an acute ischemic stroke and its relationship with the clinical evolution after 3 months”, thesis directed by the main researcher of the Millennium iHEALTH Institute, Dr. Stéren Chabert.

During the event, which was well received, the analyzes obtained as a result of the collaboration that allowed working with patients from the same hospital facility and with professionals from emergency services, neurology, imaging and rehabilitation were shared.

Thanks to the research, framed in Astrid's thesis work, it was possible to obtain a new look at the ischemic brain accident in its first 48 hours, a disorder that consists of the obstruction of the blood vessels that supply the brain by blood clots or other particles.

The data used was obtained from volunteer patients who suffered an ischemic stroke, who underwent brain MRI, in addition to blood tests to obtain inflammatory information. Finally, it was found that there is a high correlation between these episodes with motor compromise at 6 months.

This new early information is valuable for the work of neurologists and the projection of rehabilitation in this area.

Regarding the future projections of the work, Astrid comments that "since the technique used is non-invasive and brief, with further development we could make it faster and package it in software to make it easier for clinical use".

Furthermore, the doctoral student adds that “the harmony and good collaboration with the hospital allows work to be carried out at the highest level, as can be seen in the scientific publications previously carried out between the same neurosurgery team and Dr. Stéren. Chabert”.
