iHEALTH Shines at UC School of Engineering Research Week
From October 14 to 16, several members of iHEALTH took part in the UC School of Engineering Research Week, an event designed to “celebrate and highlight the research conducted at the school.” A standout achievement was doctoral student Verónica Marín’s first-place win in the “Your Research in 3 Minutes” contest.
On the first day, Dr. Claudia Prieto, director of iHEALTH and head of the UC School of Engineering’s Department of Research and Innovation, opened the event with a speech highlighting the importance of “gathering, connecting, and sharing our research, strengthening the interdisciplinary ties needed to tackle future challenges.”
As part of the Research Challenges in Technology Development session, Dr. María Rodríguez, a principal researcher at iHEALTH and professor at the Institute of Biological and Medical Engineering (IIBM), presented her study focused on personalizing physiological responses to different altitudes using sensors that monitor variables like oxygen consumption and heart rate.
Later, a group of undergraduate and graduate students presented their research in the Your Research in 3 Minutes contest. In this category, doctoral student Verónica Marín, guided by iHEALTH associate researcher Dr. Rodrigo Cádiz, won first place with her thesis research, “Lung Aeration via Quantitative Ultrasound.” Reflecting on her achievement, the sound engineer shared, “I am delighted to have expressed the pride I feel in contributing, through my work, to improving people’s health and to have earned first place.”
At the Research Fair held in the engineering courtyard on the final day of the event, iHEALTH showcased its research at a booth led by postdoctoral researchers Dr. Carlos Valle and Dr. Ronal Coronado. There, undergraduate and graduate students were invited to explore thesis and internship opportunities available at the institute.
iHEALTH’s participation in UC Engineering Research Week underscores its commitment to fostering new talent and advancing health innovations through technology. The diverse projects and achievements of its members not only enrich the academic community but also strengthen connections with future professionals interested in contributing to societal well-being through scientific research.
