iHEALTH shines at the 2024 Chilean Congress of Radiology

The Instituto Milenio iHEALTH had a significant presence at the annual meeting organized by the Chilean Society of Radiology, held from October 3rd to 5th. The event brought together national and international specialists to discuss the latest developments in radiology, technological advances, and the exploration of emerging trends in diagnostic imaging.

The session on Thursday, October 3rd, featured the Artificial Intelligence Workshop, led by iHEALTH principal investigator Dr. Cecilia Besa alongside Dr. Héctor Henríquez from the Universidad de Los Andes. The workshop was divided into two segments: "First steps in AI projects in radiology" and "Deep Learning in medical image segmentation."

The Artificial Intelligence module, part of the workshop, included presentations by two other iHEALTH principal investigators: Dr. Domingo Mery, who discussed personalized disease prediction using AI, and Dr. Denis Parra, who presented on the applications of large language models (LLM) in healthcare. The session ended with a roundtable discussion featuring renowned radiologists Dr. Felipe Munera from the Miller School of Medicine and Dr. Charles E. Kahn Jr. from the University of Pennsylvania.

Additionally, that same day, UC doctoral student Benjamín Pizarro presented his work titled "Muscle fat infiltration as a diagnostic biomarker in Dysferlinopathy."

On the second day, one of the highlights was the XI Course on Medical Technology, where several iHEALTH members discussed advances in imaging and AI integration across various fields. Cristina Alfaro, a UC doctoral student, presented “Exploring new opportunities in scientific research on breast imaging: Impacts and potential developments in AI.” Similarly, Sebastián Ponce, a UV doctoral student, explored "Radiomics in prostate cancer," while Pamela González, a UC doctoral student, presented her study on "In vivo neurological characteristics of chronic traumatic encephalopathy in retired football players: An MRI study."

On October 4th, other members of the iHEALTH community also participated by presenting scientific papers. Claudia Pazmiño, Gregory Schuit, and Jorge Facuse, UC master's students, respectively presented "Body composition by MRI in Cushing's syndrome," "Characterizing generative AI methods for chest X-ray imaging," and "Generalizing tumor aggressiveness classification in prostate MRI in a cohort of Chilean patients." Additionally, Ignacio Celis, a medical technologist in charge of the 0.55T MRI scanner, presented the poster "Creation and validation of 3D printed models with femoroacetabular impingement for educational purposes."

iHEALTH’s participation in the 2024 Chilean Congress of Radiology reaffirms its commitment to innovation in artificial intelligence applied to healthcare, demonstrating advances in more accurate and accessible diagnoses using emerging technologies.
