Five iHEALTH researchers recognized among the top 2% most cited scientists worldwide

Five researchers from the Millennium Institute for Intelligent Healthcare Engineering (iHEALTH) were included in the 2025 edition of the prestigious global scientific impact ranking compiled by Stanford University and Elsevier, based on Scopus data. The list features Dr. Domingo Mery (computer vision), Dr. Pablo Estévez (artificial intelligence), Dr. Cristián Navarrete (dermatology), Dr. René Botnar (cardiovascular imaging), and Dr. Claudia Prieto (medical imaging).

The ranking identifies the top 2% of the most cited scientists worldwide, using a composite indicator (c-score) that takes into account factors such as number of citations, authorship position, co-authorship, and researcher trajectory. The 2025 version was released in August and updates information up to the end of 2024, analyzing more than 100,000 researcher profiles across 22 scientific fields and 174 subfields.

This international recognition highlights the relevance of the work carried out at iHEALTH, whose interdisciplinary approach combines engineering, artificial intelligence, and medicine to address critical health challenges. The award-winning researchers’ studies have contributed to the development of new tools for medical imaging, advanced AI methods, and clinical applications that directly impact the detection and treatment of diseases.

  • Dr. Domingo Mery, principal investigator at iHEALTH and professor at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, is a leading expert in computer vision applied to the early detection of pathologies such as skin cancer.
  • Dr. Pablo Estévez, principal investigator at iHEALTH and professor at Universidad de Chile, specializes in artificial intelligence and machine learning models, with applications in health (neurobiology) as well as in other fields such as astronomy.
  • Dr. Cristián Navarrete, adjunct investigator at iHEALTH and professor at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, focuses his research on tools such as confocal microscopy and artificial intelligence applied to dermatology.
  • Dr. René Botnar, principal investigator at iHEALTH and professor at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, is recognized for his leadership in cardiovascular imaging and the development of new magnetic resonance imaging techniques.
  • Dr. Claudia Prieto, director of iHEALTH and professor at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, is a leading researcher in medical imaging and artificial intelligence algorithms to improve medical diagnostics.

The inclusion of five of its researchers in this classification reaffirms iHEALTH’s commitment to scientific excellence and its contribution to advancing knowledge with a direct impact on people’s health, both in Chile and worldwide.
