Claudia Prieto, PhD

Dr. Prieto’s research focuses on the development of novel medical imaging  techniques and Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled solutions, including medical imaging  physics, reconstruction, motion correction and clinical translation. She has a special interest in quantitative multiparametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and hybrid PET (Positron Emission Tomography)-MR imaging technologies. Dr. Prieto has published 121 journal and review articles, 12 full conference papers, more than 200 peer-reviewed conference abstracts and 7 book chapters in these areas (Google scholar h-index = 30). In addition, she has a high interest in working closely with clinical collaborators and industrial partners to promote the clinical translation of her research, as a result of this she has filed 5 patents in collaboration with industry and 5 of her PhD students have been co-funded by industry.   

Marcelo Andia, MD, PhD

Dr Andia’s main research goal is to transform the way we perform medical diagnoses today, and to develop new quantitative, non-invasive and repeatable diagnostic tools, which are based on the pathophysiological basis of human disease. Dr Andia has published 53 scientific articles and one book chapter in molecular imaging (Google scholar h-index = 24).

Cecilia Besa, MD

Research lines: Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Quantitative Radiology, Noninvasive Imaging Biomarkers, Focal and Diffuse Liver Disease. 



Dr. Besa current research is centered on the development and clinical application of advanced imaging tools and biomarkers, with a special interest in quantitative multiparametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and PET (Positron Emission Tomography) imaging technologies. She has extensive expertise in image interpretation and post-processing of medical images with a special focus in methods characterizing thoracic and abdominopelvic diseases among others. The ultimate goal of Dr Besa’s research is to translate advanced quantitative imaging methods into clinical reality, with the development of accurate non-invasive biomarkers. Dr Besa has published 51 journal and review articles, more than 100 peer-reviewed conference abstracts and 2 book chapters in these areas (Google scholar h-index = 26). 

René Botnar, PhD

Research lines:  Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Cardiovascular Imaging, Atherosclerosis, Molecular Imaging, Contrast Agents, Motion Correction.



Dr Botnar’s research currently focuses on 1) the development and clinical validation of novel magnetic resonance (MR) imaging technology (data acquisition, motion correction, signal quantification) for the diagnosis of heart disease, and 2) the development of novel contrast agents for the early detection of molecular changes in cardiovascular disease. The main objective of his research is to make cardiac MRI more efficient, robust, cost efficient and easier to use. His multidisciplinary imaging research group consists of engineers, physicists, biologists, chemists and medical doctors that work together to tackle interdisciplinary challenges in imaging sciences, biology and medicine. He has published more than 280 original papers in prestigious journals such as New England Journal of Medicine, Nature Medicine, Science Translational Medicine and Circulation among others. He also authored more than 40 review articles, 25 book chapters and filed 10 patent applications on MRI methodology (Google scholar h-index = 65). 

Steren Chabert, PhD

Research lines:  Biomedical Engineering, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Functional MRI, Diffusion MRI.



Dr Chabert’s research also focuses on the development of novel acquisition methods for diffusion and functional MRI in order to obtain more detailed  information of biophysical processes. In fMRI, besides performing clinical studies in different patient cohorts to study physiopathological processes, her interest focuses on developing novel processing methods that would allow to take the patient response function into account during data analysis. Dr Chabert’s research also focuses on the development of novel registration methods to facilitate data analysis of neurological images. She has published 20 journal articles, more than 50 conference abstracts and 1 book chapter in the area of neuro MRI. She holds 4 intellectual property registries, 2 patents, and 1 additional patent have been filed (Google scholar h-index = 11). 

Pablo Estevez, PhD

Research lines:  Artificial Intelligence, Neural Networks, Big Data, Computational Intelligence.



Dr Estevez’s research interests include artificial intelligence, big data, deep learning, artificial neural networks, self-organizing maps, data visualization, feature selection, information theoretic-learning, time series analysis, and advanced signal and image processing. Prof. Estévez has investigated for 20 years on sleep EEG, from building sleep stage classifiers, to sleep spindle, K-complexes and rapid eye movement detectors. He has also worked on medical image processing and medical decision making. In addition in the last 6 years, Prof. Estévez has been working on the theory and applications of deep learning, convolutional neural networks and recurrent neural networks, techniques that are at the core of current AI. He has co-authored more than 150 articles in journals and conferences (Google Scholar h-index = 32).

Domingo Mery, PhD

Research lines:  Artificial Intelligence, Machine Vision, X-ray Imaging, Biometrics.



Dr Mery’s research focuses on 2D and 3D optical and X-ray images that can be interpreted with the help of computer vision algorithms. Special interest has been to create algorithms that can be used to aid human operators, and algorithms that can be used to learn new models based on human perception, and how to  incorporate the richness of human visual perception in the core of the proposed computer vision algorithms. In order to develop real-world applications of computer vision, the core of his research is the collaboration with local and international research labs and the industry. He is author of more than 80 technical WoS publications, and more than 90 conference papers (Google Scholar h-index = 41).

Denis Parra, PhD

Research lines:  Recommender Systems, Intelligent User Interfaces, Information Visualization, Artificial Intelligence, Natural Language Generation.



His main research topics are Recommendation Systems, Intelligent User Interfaces, Information Visualization, and applications of Artificial Intelligence to several domains, intelligent user intelligent user interfaces for evidence-based healthcare and user interfaces for explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) applied to medical problems. Moreover, he is currently working on automatic radiologic report generation from medical images using deep learning methods. Dr. Parra has published more than 15 ISI journal articles and more than 40 articles in peer-reviewed conferences and workshops (Google scholar h-index=23).

María Rodríguez, PhD

Dr. Rodriguez-Fernandez research aims to understand complex biological and physiological systems integrating high-throughput experimental techniques, data processing, and computational models. She has published 31 journal articles, 8 conference papers, 38 peer-reviewed conference abstracts and 6 book chapters in these areas (Google Scholar h-index = 18).

Rodrigo Salas, PhD

Research lines:  Data Science, Machine Learning, Pattern Recognition, Artificial Neural Networks.



Research interests include Computational Intelligence, Data Science, Decision Support Systems, Intelligent Systems and their applications to finance, air pollution, healthcare and medicine. Dr. Salas’s research focuses on the development of new models of Artificial Intelligence with emphasis on Artificial Neural Networks, Deep Learning and Fuzzy Logic, improving their applications in fields such as images and medical signals. Since 2001, Dr. Salas has produced 34 ISI publications, 30 SCOPUS publications, and 4 book chapters (Google Scholar h-index = 14).
